A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder (and Hilarity)

One of my favorite things about my season in New York has been indulging in my Broadway addiction and by far my favorite new show of the year is A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder.  (I've seen it twice with plans to go again.)  So naturally, I was thrilled to see this little-show-that-could (no Big Names attached, multiple Broadway debuts) is leading the nominations for Tonys, Outer Critics Circle and Drama Desk Awards this year.

It's sort of Gosford Park meets Oscar Wilde with music and romance.  All of the performances are brilliant and who doesn't love a good murder?  (It seems to be a theme this year, with Bullets Over Broadway on the Great White Way as well as Heathers & Murder For Two Off-Broadway.)  Anyway, I wanted to pimp my favorite show a bit.  If you're in New York, it's a must see.

Here's a bit of one of my favorite songs... the love triangle, when Our Intrepid Hero Monty is caught with his mistress in one room and his fiance in the other...

Can You Feel the Looooooove Tonight?

What really happens in your brain on a first date?  This video. Kind of disturbingly accurate.

And Now For Something Completely Different...

Because Bad Lip-Reading is awesome.  Game of Thrones is awesome.  And the combination is... just seriously random.

Video Love

So, my gym plays music videos - actual, for-real, used-to-be-on-MTV music videos - which I find both novel and fabulous.  For the last several days I have been mildly obsessed with this one (I just wish we got to see more of the dancing).  It's so So You Think You Can Dance!  Happy Friday, darlings!

I"m intrigued by this idea.  It's a book... and more than a book...

The Next Big Thing?

Dino erotica.  Seriously.  (Segment starts at 4.25)

I heard about this last week in the context of a spoof of the bizarre phenom (The Bodice Raptor... Rex and the Single Girl...).  A writer friend was prompted to ask, "What's next?"  She postulated that perhaps we were heading into the brave new world of sex with National Monuments (among others).  What do you think?  Mount Rushmore Menage.  They can't resist her National Treasure.  "Oh, Mr. Lincoln, what a big hat you have..." "Is that the Washington Monument in your pocket or are you just happy to see me?" Or maybe 50 Shades of Shutdown... When the monuments shut down, our founding fathers get it up...  Night at the Museum: Horny Presidents Edition

Yeah, maybe not.  I might never write the Next Big (Ridiculous) Thing, but I admit I'm secretly hoping Liz Talley follows through on her joking offer to write Bigfoot erotica.  I would just die.

Dang, Girl

Real life sisters (and playing them on TV) Lennon and Maisy Stella are just wicked talented, y'all, and performances like this are why I'm addicted to Nashville.  Observe the awesome:

Very Superstitious

I've been talking about superstition lately and since it's SUNDAY, SUNDAY, SUNDAY and I'm sitting here biting my nails for the 49ers, I thought I'd ask about sports superstitions.  Like, a commentator saying the words "He hasn't thrown an interception yet this game" is the kiss of death.  Next play?  Interception.  Baseball curses are my favorite (the poor Cubbies and that damn goat!), but I think just about every sport has crazy superstitions.  They bring the fan into the game.  We may not be able to tackle that rusher for you, but with enough concentrated energy, we fully believe we can sway the luck.

Here's my favorite football commercial this year:

And, since I'm a baseball junkie, I just had to include this quote from Bull Durham.  Respect the streak, baby.
Crash Davis: I told him that a player on a streak has to respect the streak. You know why? Because they don't - -they don't happen very often. If you believe you're playing well because you're getting laid, or because you're not getting laid, or because you wear women's underwear, then you are! And you should know that!
Do you have a favorite sports superstition?

LXD

Since I've been talking about superheroes, how about some superheroes of the dance variety? (Just ignore the snark about Iron Man and Spider-man.)

Neil Gaiman and All Kinds of Awesome

This has been making the rounds on the Interwebz, so you may have already seen it, but it's the kind of thing I feel cannot be seen too much. I love this man. I want to watch this every day. I want the words to seep into my skin until they are part of me. So brilliant.

Best Author Interview Evah

Dude. You guys, Maurice Sendak is so fabulously cantankerous. My favorite part? Right at the very very end where he talks about ebooks.

Romance Writers on Romance

My fellow romance-lovers, we must set an example for those who would mock our genre by always taking our books EXTREMELY SERIOUSLY. In that vein, to promote our somber dedication to all things romance, I present the following not at all funny or tongue-in-cheek video.

*snort* You didn't really think I had suddenly started taking myself seriously, did you?

What He Said

Dude. Y'all. I had to share this video on the whole Judy Mays fiasco I mentioned last week because:

1) I am deeply impressed by anyone who can talk that fast AND be intelligent while doing so.
2) It's one of those things that needs to be said and saying it more than once? Not a bad thing.

I'm now picturing the Saw screenwriter doing research. Heh.

Oh, and I know on Friday I promised news on giveaway goodness today... so here's the word: Starting SOON (delay of game due to Act of God weather conditions in Alabama) Moira Rogers (the most excellent Bree & Donna) and Vivian Arend are doing a big ole fabulous giveaway over at their respective blogs. The Ecstasy and the Agony: Baseball Season Returns

It's Baseball Season again, boys and girls! Spring Fever has hit and I'm ready to cheer our boys on to victory... or, erm, since I'm a Mariners fan, I'm ready to cheer them on to... whatever it is we define as victory this year. Not last! Yeah, I'm totally ready to cheer my boys on to Not Last! Woot!

Seriously, though, there have been enough Cinderella teams over the years that I really think our boys have a shot this year. (I do! Don't laugh! We had a Cy Young winner last year! And Ichiro! Ichiro is awesome!) We can go all the way. It's just a question of all the pieces falling together. Sometimes magic happens. Here's to another 1995, another 2001. Let's hear it for the boys in blue!

And if you come from a baseball town other than NYC or St. Louis, you might appreciate this commercial about the agony of our, erm, waxing success. Or is it waning? I always get those two mixed up.

Happy Baseball Season, everyone!
