Oscar are just around the corner and for once I've actually seen every single one of the Best Picture Nominees. The choices for the Academy this year are:
- The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
- Frost/Nixon
- Milk
- The Reader
- Slumdog Millionaire
If I were picking the winner, I'd definitely go with Slumdog Millionaire, though Frost/Nixon and Milk put up a good fight. I wasn't a huge fan of Benjamin Button, though I have to say the idea was very cool and the cinematography was gorgeous. And The Reader, eh, I wonder if I would have liked it better if I hadn't liked the book so much. Not that it was a bad adaptation, but there were no surprises for me and I think the impact of the movie relies on its ability to surprise the audience. So of those five, I choose Slumdog Millionaire. But was that the best movie of the year? I kinda loved Ironman and The Dark Knight, but I have a feeling it will be an icy day in hell before a comic book wins an Oscar...

I haven't seen any of 'em. But I like to Tivo the Oscars and zip through it in about an hour minus the commercials and producers.

I suspect that Slumdog Millionaire will get my vote once I see it. Of the movies I have seen so far, Milk, The Dark Knight, and Ironman were my favorites. I would have to say that the wildest ride was Choke, but since it's far too extreme for a broad audience I doubt it would be considered for any major awards.
I still haven't seen Forgetting Sarah Marshall, though I really really want to!
And Choke was... very like the book - which was also disturbing yet brilliant. Chuck Palahniuk is a twisted, twisted man. Bless his heart.
I'm actually kind of surprised that Revolutionary Road didn't get nominated. It's a super-dramatic drama, but it was beautifully done and it seems very Oscar-friendly. I wonder who Sam Mendes pissed off to get overlooked in both Best Picture & Director.
